Sunday Tragedy

Yesterday was a bad day here at Clay Hill... a dog decimated half of our flock of chickens. Somebody (who shall remain nameless, but who has since expressed sincere apologies AND done some serious cleaning to make things up to me) left the coop door open, and in less than twenty minutes (because I was in and out and it was between trips), half the flock was gone.

The rooster, my little mutt birds, two of my White Rocks and a Rhode Island Red hen were killed. The remainder of the flock made it back into the coop and escaped the dog. We don't know which dog it was, and it doesn't really matter, anyway. If the chickens hadn't been out, the dog couldn't have killed them.

The truth is that we had too many hens for our needs, but I was planning to give some away. I did not want them killed. :( So, now I'm sad, and I'm mourning my girls. I'd give a whole flat of pansies just to have them back.

So sorry to hear about your chickens Terri. My heart hurt just reading about your loss. When I had my birds they were like kids, each had their own personality.

Take Care,
Debbie

It's always rough when something like this happens.

We had that happen once and only one chicken lived, a Rooster, we called lonesome.

The whole thing is just plain sad!

Thank you, everyone, for the kind comments. I know they were just chickens, but it still made me sad. The remaining girls are doing just fine, though, aided along by lots of treats from folks who may or may not have a guilty conscience! And life goes on.

Aw, Terri, I am so sorry to hear about what has happened to your chickens. I would feel very sad too. Hugs to you. I'm glad some were able to escape the dog at least.
