I just watched this series today on DVD, and I loved it. It was a fabulous portrayal of life in England during World War II, complete with air raids and food rationing. I am tempted to buy it and watch it every time I feel the urge to wallow in self-pity. The deprivation was astonishing! I knew there was food rationing during World War II, but I had no idea to what extent. This series was eye-opening.
In my experience, the people who lived through the 30's and 40's are some of the most stoic and sensible people we see, and viewing this series made me understand why that might be the case. There simply wasn't time to whine and feel sorry for yourself. If you survived, it's because you pulled yourself up by your bootstraps and made do with what you had.
I think that's what I love about all of my blogging friends. We may not suffer under the same deprivation as our mothers and grandmothers and fathers and grandfathers did, but all of you are smart and resourceful and creative, and I am sure that any of you would manage beautifully if you found yourselves in a situation where everything depended on your intelligence and resourcefulness and ability to survive.
So, give yourselves a pat on the back, from me, and if you get the chance to see
1940's House, I highly recommend that you watch it. With your kids, if you can, so you can point out to them (as I did to my son) exactly how spoiled modern children have become! :)

I haven't heard of this one. Sounds really interesting. I agree that the people of that era were hard working and creative. They really had no choice but to do so, I think.
I think that use to be on PBS when we lived in Ga. I never watched it tho.
That looks like a good one. I wonder if Netflix has it? You are right, the people in those days sure had to have character!
I have never heard of that one but it does look like something I would enjoy. I do love my modern conveniences but still feel I was born in the wrong time. :)

My mother lived through this. She was in England during WWII It's how she met my father. (He was in the AF stationed there.)
She told me first hand accounts about the rationing and the air raids, etc. Scary stuff.
I might have to find this series and watch it myself. Thanks.

Rationing was everywhere it seems. I sometimes get concerned we may start to see those really hard times again. Boy, I hope not! The next question I then ask myself...can I do it? If it happens I mean? I sure hope so.

Thanks I just requested from the library. So nice I can do that from my computer. My grandma tells me all the time we don't relize how much we have. When I hear about her life I know how right she is. We are truly spoiled.
I may have to get it just to show my children how spoiled they are! I keep telling them, but they don't believe me!
Wasn't this a great series??? We loved it.
Yes, Cris, Netflix does. They have a couple other similar ones too. The Pilgrim one is interesting as well.
